Points Lifecycle Report

note

The Insights menu and Standard Reports or Reports Overview sub-menu are only visible if you have the correct permissions to access reports.

The Points Lifecycle dashboard uses FIFO (First In, First Out) tracking of points in the loyalty program. Under this method, the oldest points earned by customers are used before newer ones. FIFO tracking helps manage the financial liability associated with points — since points represent a future obligation, this approach lets the business control and predict the timing of that obligation more accurately. The report enables finance and accounting departments to analyze point utilization trends, forecast burn rates, and manage future liability.

note

For more information about specific metrics within this report, see the Loyalty Product Reporting Training Handbook available from your Exchange Solutions representative.

The Points Lifecycle report consists of two sections:

  1. Points Lifecycle Summary: A line chart showing the progression of points earned and burned over a number of periods.
  2. Details: Details about points earned and burned by period, shown as absolute amounts or percentages.

The period used as the baseline reference for the other categories and data is set using a menu selector at the top of the page.

To access the Points Lifecycle report:

  1. Navigate to Insights > Reports Overview > Standard Reports.
  2. Click Liability Management > Points Lifecycle > Summary.
  3. To view the Details page, click the Details button at the top of the Summary page.

To use the controls on the bottom toolbar:

Refer to the Common Controls for Reports topic.

Points Lifecycle Summary Report

The Points Lifecycle dashboard opens on the Points Lifecycle Summary report. This report includes several sections (top to bottom):

  1. Selected Earned and Reporting Period: This filter section lets you choose from a list of earned periods and track the consumption or burn of points by selecting the appropriate reporting period. If there are multiple business units, you can also select the relevant business unit calendar. Note that the reporting period is based on a business fiscal calendar or a standard calendar. It is tied to the date and time when the burn transaction consumed points from a particular earned period using the FIFO method. Only reporting periods that are fully completed relative to the current date are included in the report.

  2. Summary of Points: Points earned based on the selections in the first section are displayed in several charts:

    • Earned Points: The total points earned by the end of the selected earned period.
    • Redeemed Points: Points redeemed from the selected earned period by the end of the reporting period. Also shows redeemed points during the reporting period as a percentage of the average, the average redemption across intervening periods, and a chart of cumulative redemptions as a percentage of points earned in the earned period.
    • Adjusted Points: Adjusted points from the selected earned period by the end of the reporting period. Also shows adjusted points during the reporting period as a percentage of the average, the average adjusted points across intervening periods, and a chart of cumulative adjustments as a percentage of points earned in the earned period.
    • Unused Points (Breakage): Unused points from the selected earned period by the end of the reporting period. Also shows unused points during the reporting period as a percentage of total earned points and the average (median) lifespan of unused points (in periods) in the loyalty program.
    • Expired Points: Expired points from the selected earned period by the end of the reporting period. Also shows average expired points over intervening periods and a chart of expired points as a percentage of points earned during the earned period over time.
    • Total Burned Points: Total burned points from the selected earned period during the reporting period. Also shows average burned points from the earned period over intervening periods and a chart of burned points as a percentage of points earned during the earned period over time.
  3. Waterfall of Avg Unused Points: A line chart showing the progression of points earned, burned, or redeemed (the Waterfall Metric) from one period to the next over a selected range of reporting periods. This makes it easy to see trends in the point balance over time. Since points earned in any given period tend to be burned or expired over time, the chart typically shows bars of declining magnitude — a "waterfall" from left to right.

  4. Avg Points Activity by Range of Reporting Period: Lets you filter by year of earned period and range of reporting periods (3, 6, 9, or 12 periods) to see metrics for that year averaged over the selected range. You can view average earned, redeemed, adjusted, and expired points, resulting in average burned points. Average unused points are also shown. The averages are calculated from all earned periods in the selected year that had at least n reporting periods, where n is the value selected in Select Range of Reporting Periods.

  5. Avg Burned Points Activity by Range of Reporting Period: Charts showing average burned points and the percentage of burned to earned points for 3, 6, 9, and 12 reporting periods. This helps forecast average points burned and unused across different ranges of periods. For example, you can see the trend in the percentage of points redeemed within 3, 6, 9, and 12 periods.

FIFO Details Report

The FIFO Details report, accessed by clicking the Details tab at the top of the Summary page, shows a tabular comparison of fiscal periods. The main table includes metrics for points earned, burned, redeemed, transferred, adjusted, unused, and expired for each period. The selectors at the top let you refine the data by business unit, earned and reporting periods, and season (Winter or Summer). You can click through data in the table to update the trend graphs shown at the bottom of the page.

The filters at the top of the page include:

  1. Select BU's Calendar: If the business has multiple business units, lets you select different calendars for reporting based on business unit.
  2. Year of Earned Period: Multi-select for the year(s) in which points were earned.
  3. Earned Period: Multi-select for any earned period available in the report.
  4. Reporting Period: Multi-select for any reporting period available across earned periods.
  5. Period Label: Indicates the sequence of the reporting period within its earned period.
  6. Winter/Summer Period: Filters data by the specified season.
  7. Burn Period Start Dt slider: Sets the range for selecting different reporting period start dates.
  8. Burn Period End Dt slider: Sets the range for selecting different reporting period end dates.

The metrics (columns) in the data table include:

The trend graph at the bottom of the page responds to your selections above and shows trends for the data point selected in the table, along with the filters for the reporting periods. The chart shows the trend for a selected period across all selected reporting periods since the earned period. For example, if Points Burned for 2023 P01 is selected in the table, the chart shows points burned by reporting period thereafter. The chart title corresponds to the selected data. Hover over or click data points in the chart to see more information.

The second chart shows the Running Redeemed to Earned Rate compared across selected periods. It can be used to compare burn rates for one or more periods selected from the Earned Period filter at the top of the chart. Hover over or click data points in the chart to see more information.
